Sinopse: A série apresenta a trajetória de Ragnar Lodbrok, um jovem que se considera descendente de Odin. Ragner é um guerreiro e fazendeiro casado com Lagertha, mulher que fabrica escudos, com quem tem dois filhos pequenos.
Visionário e sonhando viver diversas aventuras, ele acredita que as riquezas sonhadas por seu povo encontram-se além do mar Báltico. Seus sonhos o levam a se tornar uma figura importante na aldeia, o que provoca uma certa tensão entre ele e seu irmão Rollo, um homem cruel que sente inveja da ascensão de Ragnar. Mas seu maior desafio é convencer Jarl Haraldson, o líder de seu povo, a permitir que ele reúna guerreiros para viajar para o norte.
